By now, we’re all pretty familiar with what to expect on a stage for a musician. Nobody is surprised to see a microphone, a collection of instruments and some speakers. Sometimes we get a glimpse behind-the-scenes and see the setlist taped to the floor, or if we have a good angle we can see the monitors for the singers. But speak to any performer and they’ll tell you that what you see ain’t the half of what you’re actually getting.

We spoke to some of our artists to ask them what they can’t make do without…


Duct Tape  – This came up across the spectrum of singers, guitarists, drummers and the rest. Our artists use this for taping leads down, securing equipment, preventing trip hazards, temporary repairs to gear and much, much more. One of our percussionists says that he even uses it to tape himself to his stool so that he doesn’t get too carried away when he’s in the groove!

 

Multi Tool – A favourite of whoever is responsible for setting up the sound and lights, a good multi-tool can be invaluable at any gig. No self-respecting superstar wants to carry around a toolbox, but this little gem is perfect for making adjustments to kit, adapting the stage environment to suit, assembling or collapsing folding gear, cutting material and any other impromptu necessities.

 

Spare & Extension Leads  – You only make this mistake once…

 

Sharpie – For when a borrowed biro just won’t cut it. Sharpies have become favourites of musicians worldwide for making notes on the PA system, scribbling a set list, noting down requests etc. Having a pen that can write on hands, equipment, paper and the stage is a life-saver.

 

Spare Strings  – Goes without saying for all stringed instruments. Sometimes you just get too into the song…

 

Spare Everything-Else – Drumsticks, plectrums, dampeners, tuning keys, clippers, winders…

 

9V Batteries – Most decent equipment can run off these impressive little cells. If you’re hiring musicians and plan for them to play away from a main source of power, it might be wise to get some of these in just in case. Don’t rely on extension leads or the reliability of the electricity.

 

Energy Drinks  – For when the bride begs for another last song. You can’t refuse a lady anything on her wedding day!
